How to fix Malware problems

Recently I have been attacked by a Malware also known as malicious software. I don’t really know how I got this virus on my computer but this annoyed me for so long. I would get popups every time I would go on to the internet. In task manager it would say iexplorer.exe is using the most amount of processor so I’d end process it however the Trojan kept reinstalling itself. For all of you that don’t know what a Malware is here is the meaning. Malware includes computer viruses, worms, trojan horses, most rootkits, spyware, dishonest adware, and other malicious and unwanted software. Malware should not be confused with defective software, that is, software which has a legitimate purpose but contains harmful bugs.

The term computer virus is used for a program which has infected some executable software and which causes that software, when run, to spread the virus to other executable software. Viruses may also contain a payload which performs other actions, often malicious.

A worm, on the other hand, is a program which actively transmits itself over a network to infect other computers. It too may carry a payload.

A Trojan horse, or simply trojan, is a piece of software which appears to perform a certain action but in fact performs another such as transmitting a computer virus.

The program I was infected with was called REF SUPPORT.EXE. The filename REF SUPPORT.EXE refers to many versions of an executable program. The most common file size is 2,411,520 bytes. The unsafe files using this name are associated with the malware group Adware.Lop. These files have no vendor, product or version information specified in the file header.

REF SUPPORT.EXE has been seen to perform the following behavior(s):

  • Executes a Process
  • Writes to another Process’s Virtual Memory (Process Hijacking)

REF SUPPORT.EXE has been the subject of the following behavior(s):

  • Added as a Registry auto start to load Program on Boot up
  • Executed as a Process
  • Executed by Internet Explorer

Removal Instructions:

After many attempts to scan with NOD32, Spybot and Ad-Aware 2008, we soon found out they could not detect the malware and all attempts at scanning where hopeless. I then realized iexplorer.exe was running everytime I booted my computer, however this was no ordinary iexplorer.exe as this was a hijacked iexplorer.exe due to the malware above. I then thought well if it is being started everytime, I might as well have a look in the startup registry by selecting run from the start menu and entering, ‘regedit’ and pressing ok. I then navigated to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Run] and looked for a ridiculous name on the right hand side of the registry editor. Sure enough we found it and located where this file was then deleted it. As simple as that!

Key Steps:

Locate run in the ‘start menu’

Type ‘regedit’

Press ok

Navigate to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Run]

Look for a ridiculous name on the right hand side of the registry editor

Go to the location of this file in My Computer

Delete the file (may have to end process)

Sony Ericsson W880i vs Nokia 6288

I have been using a nokia 6288 for the past year and a half and just recently bought a Sony Ericsson W880i. There are few features that i liked about the nokia that i dont have with the sony ericsson. Firstly the nokia, the top part of the slider is dominated by a 320 x 240 pixel screen, with the large navigation keys nestled snugly beneath. Pushing the slider up reveals a businesslike grid-style keypad, its rectangular buttons surrounded by a thin silver line. A tiny front-mounted VGA camera is almost invisible, hiding in the top left-hand corner. The back features a 2-megapixel camera, complete with flash and teeny fisheye mirror for those times when you just have to take a photo or two of your own face. Although after a while i found that this phone started to play up. It struggles to do the basic things with a 1gb memory stick in it.

The SOny Ericsson however did not struggle do do these basic tasks. There are some features that i dont like in this phone like the keys are to small to use, it has no flash and the camera is not as good as the nokia. Here are the good features an ultra-thin design making it only 9.4mm thick, it stealthily slides into your pocket with almost no bulge resulting. Laying flat the W880i has a footprint of 46.5mm by 103mm, with a rubberised back preventing it from skidding around if thrown down on a table. Tipping the scales at only 80 grams, it feels almost toy-like. The W880i has a compact but sharp screen capable of showing 262K colours and 240×320 pixels. Like many petite phones. This phone can handle everything i put in it it has about 180 songs. Over all i like my new phone better then the nokia 6288.

SocialSpark, A Bloggers Dream

welcome Everyone remembers the company name IZEA who developed PayPerPost which sparked a controversial argument with Google regarding advertising methods. Google (yes the same company that owns the search engine) developed a ranking system to rank websites against each other by checking linkage popularity on an irregular basis. Google deemed PayPerPost as an unethical way to advertise products and gave all websites that worked with the PayPerPost program, a page rank of 0.

Now IZEA is hitting back with it’s revolutionary new idea called SocialSpark. The first thing I noticed with SocialSpark is that it does not revolve around the Google PageRank unlike PayPerPost, SocialSpark revolves around a much better ranking system called RealRanks (which is also developed by IZEA). This allows us bloggers that were earned a page rank of 0, to once again blog about products and advertising for other companies. As soon as SocialSpark came out of ALPHA testing, it was an instant hit.

 SocialSpark

I guess the reason why SocialSpark is so popular around bloggers is that it allows us to gain money, it doesn’t pay a massive amount so don’t think you will make a living off it, however SocialSpark does offer a lot especially since there is not much workload and since blogging is what most people love anyway, bloggers do not have anything to lose by trying it out. However it can take some time to get adjusted to this revolutionary system.

Also another key feature that comes with SocialSpark that not many people know of are something I like to call, ethical features… They are as follows:

  • 100% Audit-able In-Post Disclosure
  • 100% Transparency
  • 100% Real Opinions
  • 100% Search Engine Friendly

To wrap this post up, not only is SocialSpark a cool way to get money for bloggers, it is also a cool way for advertisers to get their product known for a small price and tons of features. Windows XP SP3 - Nothing Special

Windows XP SP3During my monthly windows update checkup on update Tuesday, I couldn’t help but notice that Windows XP SP3 had been released and yes I still run Windows XP on my other incredibly old PC, (if I could upgrade to Vista I could but the system specs. are just too old).

When I was installing SP3 on Windows XP, I was praying to god that there were major improvements, however I was let down as SP3 contains nothing more than all the old previous updates, that I already had and a few network improvements. Nothing major, however I do like how Microsoft updated their descriptions for a few security settings which now contains a hell of a lot more detail.

As you can see this post is very short as SP3 does not contain a whole lot, however I of course recommend you update to SP3 just in case you missed some updates in the past for whatever reason. However  SP3 is a major disappointment to users like me but then again there’s no point improving a product if there is something better (cough, cough) vista (cough some more).

Windows Vista Ultimate - The Best OS so far

The Windows Vista Ultimate LogoIf you read my previous post about the Asus M51SN then you will have noticed my rampage about how people can’t be bothered learning how to use Windows Vista and therefore say crap all about it. However this post will not contain another rampage, rather it will contain the fantastic features included with Windows Vista Ultimate.

The best thing about Windows Vista Ultimate is that people can now use a feature called the ReadyBoost feature. This uses a spare USB key or memory stick in order for more virtual memory, however a word of warning, this is only good if you have a spare USB key and I wouldn’t go to a shop and buy one just for this feature. Buying more RAM is always good but if you have a spare USB key this feature is for you! Even though my laptop (Asus M51SN) has 2GB of RAM, this feature did actually help speed up my system quite a fair bit.

Windows Aero is another good feature, although it does not seem like much, this feature makes your PC look good with minimal performance impact. This can be enabled (must have a supported graphics adapter) or disabled via the cool new and much more logical control panel. The control panel may seem hard to use at first because of it’s new logical design however this is simply solved by using your brain more often and thinking logically. As if these features weren’t good enough for some reason certain applications such as Internet Explorer 7 (IE7) run a lot faster in Windows Vista, this is incredibly weird but also incredibly cool.

If you haven’t used or picked up your local version of Windows Vista Ultimate then you are definitely missing out on some pretty cool stuff. The ultimate edition is recommended even though it costs more as there are no limitations regarding the use of the Operating System (OS). Windows Vista Ultimate receives a 5/5 star rating and is recommended to people that have an open mind, can figure things out for themselves and want to have heaps of fun!

Asus M51SN - The Only Real Notebook

The Best Notebook EVER!

Before I start with this review, I should probably notify you all that Justin Lowmaster has officially left the team due to personal commitments which I don’t think I am liable to discuss. It was great to have Justin on the team even if it were for only a short amount of time, however he has completed his writing work up to Issue #9 which The Wesimation Team will be working on soon.

Anyway to kick start this review off, I must say the Asus M51SN has amazing specs and firepower. First off it can run Counter-Strike: Source at around 200FPS (Frames Per Second) with having the default settings, just keep in mind that the human eye can only see around 60-70 FPS. The GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) to accomplish this is of course the 9500m GS. This notebook also comes with Windows Vista: Ultimate Edition which everyone hates (probably because they have no clue how to use it). In all seriousness, Windows Vista has no issues as long as you keep up to date with the updates. Enough about the performance, the real question is, does everything work?

From what I can see absolutely everything works as long as you have the time to set it all up. These days people are quite lazy, when something doesn’t work the way they intend it to, they simply give up and bag the crap out of the software/hardware. Hopefully the people that bag the crap out of Vista eventually grow up and face that its the best operating system EVER!

Enough of my Vista rampage, you say? Okay, lets move onto… THE SUMMARY! YAY! The Asus M51SN completely owns all notebook out there and much cheaper than a MacBook Pro (priced at around $1,900 AUD). This notebook is recommended for games and anything else you could possibly use a notebook for!

WordPress 2.5.1 is O…M…G!

Here at wesimation.com we have recently upgraded to the newest edition of WordPress (version 2.5.1), with WordPress 2.5 being a semi-flop (yes we did know this but we upgraded anyway!), the new version 2.5.1 is a much more stable release with a few important security updates and a hell of a lot of bug fixes (counted currently at 70).

The WordPress team suggest that you COULD update the files just to implement the security updates however this is not advised as there is one major bug fix that they have implemented. I posted this bug on the WordPress forum about 3 weeks ago where everyone was sort of having the same problem. The bug seemed to have occurred when people edit their text widgets on the sidebar and if they press cancel, WordPress seems to think it is okay to remove all of the text widgets content (including others). Can you imagine how annoying this was? Having to constantly backup the SQL database just in case the text widget randomly removes the content.

This is why I strongly suggest all WordPress users to implement this complete update and once you use it you too will be OMG! This update can be found at the usual spots including http://wordpress.org/download/
